Why the Seiko Prospex SSC961P1 Is the Ideal Chronograph for Everyday Adventures

Call it versatile. Call it the best value Japanese watch you can buy. Call it the Seiko Prospex SSC961P1

Of course it should come to no surprise. A Seiko Prospex is a name that has a significant background. Born out of a combination of the words professional and specifications, every watch in this collection means serious business. And the SSC961P1 is every bit a stunning example of what makes the Seiko Prospex special.

A Name Steeped In History

The Seiko Speedtimer name is actually one of the most storied in the pantheon of horological significance. In 1969, this was among the first mechanical chronographs, using an innovative clutch and column wheel movement.

The Seiko Speedtimer chronograph was valued for precision timekeeping. So much so that Colonel William Pogue used one on his extravehicular activity in outer space.

The Speedtimer was revived with the arrival of the Seiko Prospex. Many iconic Seiko Prospex Speedtimers have come. The SSC947P1 is the modern reinterpretation of the one Colonel Pogue wore for his famous spacewalk. The SSC813P1 and the SSC911P1, are iterations of a classic and sought after colorway, the white (and white silver) dial combined with black subdials and tachymeter bezel. And now the latest addition to that tradition is the SSC961P1 Speedtimer, which should be your new everyday adventure watch.

V192: One The Best Movements In The Market

But first, let’s take a look inside what makes the Seiko Prospex SSC961P1 tick. The Caliber V192 movement is special because of an astounding feature: solar-charging. The sun keeps this timepiece powered. Actually, to be more precise, even ambient light will charge this beauty. And if you store this Seiko Prospex in an unlit area, it has a very good 6 months of power with a full charge but also comes in handy with an overcharge prevention function.

But even more special is the fact that this is one of the more accurate watches you can own. With precision pegged at ±15 seconds a month, this is far more accurate than the majority of mechanical watches. It also powers the three subdials with different functions: 9 o’clock for the sub seconds (more on that later), 3 o’clock for the 24 hour indicator, and 6 o’clock for the aforementioned power reserve indicator (and another very important function that we will highlight later in this article).

With the V192 movement, you get the best of reliability and accuracy in one package. But even then, we’re forgetting another important use of the V192 movement. This also powers the SSC961P1 chronograph function.

Precision And Accuracy: The SSC961P1 Chronograph Function

If you aren’t familiar yet, a chronograph is essentially a stopwatch on your wrist. If you ever see one, you’ll see that the second hand stays firmly still in the middle. The second hand in normal usage is actually found in the subdial at the 9 o’clock position.

The magic happens when you press the pusher at the 2 o’clock position. This causes the seconds hand to move, making the SSC961P1 a stopwatch. The subdial at 6 o’clock switches to its other function which is to track the elapsed minutes for up to an hour. Pressing the 2 o’clock pusher again stops the second hand, while the 4 o’clock pusher resets the second hand back to its original position. This chronograph functions at ⅕ second increments up to the aforementioned 60 seconds.

For split times, you just press the 4 o’clock pusher without pressing the 2 o’clock pusher. This will freeze the seconds hand but internally the stopwatch is still running giving you time to write down the split time. Pushing the 4 o’clock pusher again causes the second to fly to the current time. Combined with the use of the tachymeter bezel, you can even calculate speed with a few simple calculations.

This makes the Seiko Prospex SSC961P1 especially useful. You can track all sorts of things. From your runtimes at the speedway, to minutes of the meeting, to even something as mundane as a perfectly soft-boiled egg, it is an incredibly useful feature for a sports watch.

The Marriage Of Form And Function: Seiko Prospex SSC961P1 Speedtimer

But what makes it a great option for everyday adventures is the fact that it simply looks great. The classic white dial and black subdials and tachymeter bezel combo can be paired with pretty much any outfit. Your office barong, collared polos, and statement tees all fit this timeless silhouette. Giving it a youthful slant are the warm beige accents that add a certain vibrancy to the timepiece.

On the flipside, the LumiBrite on the indices and hands not only give low-light timekeeping, but also give a slight patina style look to the watch. Over the dial is a curved sapphire clarity which adds clarity and scratch protection.

The proportions of this timepiece are also well-done at 39mm. With the hairline finishing on the bracelet, you get an extremely wearable timepiece. Using Seiko’s proprietary stainless steel, you get a solidly constructed timepiece that has 10 bar water resistance—perfect for impromptu outdoor activities where you don’t have to worry about the timepiece. This is a Seiko Prospex you can take everywhere.
